Mars gets its name from the Roman god of war and agriculture. Scientists like Mars for its mild temperament. Some people call Mars ''the red planet'' because of its red surface. If Mars were to have water it would be polar caps or it would be frozen. Of course, if you were to stand on Mars you would see red dirt and rocks everywhere. You would weigh 43 lbs less on Mars than you do on Earth. In ancient times Mars had rivers, streams, lakes, and even an ocean. In Greek language Mars means god of war. The first spacecraft to visit Mars was Mariner 4. It was visited in 1965. Its surface area is about the same as the surface area of Earth.
